Been In The Storm So Long: Traditional (recorded at my home studio)
I call myself a “nightstand musicologist” because I have a pile of books on my nightstand about the history of American music and biographies of musicians. I read the lyrics to this song in a book of African American spirituals and it really hit a nerve. I wanted to record it but I couldn’t even pretend to capture the feel of an African American Gospel singer and felt it hypocritical to try. So I tried to express the loneliness, pain, and hope with the bottleneck slide, acoustic guitar arpeggios in the background, and percussions.
